The Church of Santa Prisca of Taxco, in addition to being one of the best examples of architecture barroca of the country, is protagonist of a traditional legend between the inhabitants of the city: one tells that during the construction of the temple in the s. XVIII, it happened an extraordinary fact in which surprise the cloudless sky was covered with black clouds and lightning that drew on the cupola an inscription that said: “Gloria to God in the heights and Earth peace to the men of good will”. The event caused fear between the presents, that quick to invoke the protection of the Virgin Maria, they observed with surprise how the same one appeared on the temple, carrying in his hands the lightning that had caused such incident.
In Taxco it could be present at some of more impressive the religious celebrations of all the country, emphasizing those that are carried out during the Easter, between the months of March and April, that include a series of processions of different brotherhoods by the main streets from the city. Of these manifestations, it emphasizes the procession of the “flagelantes encapuchados”, that load heavy fardos of thorny branches, as a penance. Between days 17 and 18 of January, the traditional blessing of the animals and the “Festival of Santa Prisca” are carried out, who includes the celebration of a fair, with music and fireworks.
